Enkianthus This genus of elegant deciduous shrubs is in the family Ericaceae, whose members include rhododendron and blueberry (vaccinium). They are native to Japan and China, and the Himalayas. There are several species and a few more varieties which are grown for their clusters of bell shaped flowers in colors from pure white to deep red, as well as their graceful, usually upright plant form with clean, pest-free leaves and brilliant Fall color. Fruits are small dry capsules. They prefer moist acidic soil with good aeration similar to their rhododendron relatives in sun or partial shade. http://www.npr.org/programs/talkingplants/profiles/enkianthus.html
